We believe in the power of music to make a difference in people’s lives, and that’s never been more true than in these uncertain times.  Music gives us hope… and music teachers help put music in their students’ hearts and homes. We are so thankful that online music lessons give us the opportunity to stay connected and to keep making music together!

These six simple tips will help your child’s online lesson be a success for them and for their teacher.

Help your child make their practice – and lesson – area special!

Here’s a fun project you could dive into with your child.  Look around your practice space where you’ll also be taking your online lessons.  What can you declutter? What can you rearrange? How can you personalize the space and make it extra special?  Do you need to move your practice space to another place in the house that’s quieter?

Be present at the beginning and the ending of the online lesson.

At the beginning of the lesson, you may need to help your child get set up, ready, and into their teacher’s Zoom room.  (Your teacher will send you their unique Zoom link.) And then, you are welcome to come back towards the end of the lesson to help with any last reminders or written assignment notes the teacher may suggest.

P.S. It’s a good idea to be nearby within hearing range during the online lesson just in case your child needs help.

Plan ahead to keep things as quiet as possible around the house during the online lesson.

With everyone (or nearly everyone!) home, we realize it may not be perfectly quiet or distraction-free, but the goal is to try for there to be as few distractions as possible during the online lesson time.

On lesson day, run through this Quick Check

  • Charge your device
  • Have your child go to the restroom before the lesson begins
  • Get your device ready
  • Check the camera angle: Will the teacher be able to see your child’s face and hands?
  • Have your child wear headphones if possible
  • Make sure they have a pencil handy
  • Join your teacher’s Zoom room a few minutes early

As always, you should feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher with any questions.  They also love to hear when things are going well – including you sharing pictures with them!
