Getting started in music lessons is easier than you might think. In fact, some of the things on our list are things you already have – no purchase necessary! Let’s dive into what you need to get started – or return to – music lessons.

#1 – An Instrument
If you’re planning to take voice lessons, congratulations! Your instrument is built right in – your voice. For everyone else, having an instrument is essential. Whether it’s a piano, guitar, violin, or another instrument, you’ll need something to practice on during the week between lessons. Regular practice is the key to steady progress.
If you’re not ready to commit to buying an instrument, renting can be a great option. For digital and acoustic pianos (and the best pricing around!), we highly recommend heading over to Piano Central. For all other instruments besides pianos, Musical Innovations is a fantastic place to explore rental options.
#2 – Self-Motivation
Just the fact that you’re interested and exploring the possibility of taking music lessons suggests you already have some motivation to start music lessons. That’s a great first step! Motivation, even more than raw talent, is one of the biggest factors in long-term success with music. If a love for music is present, self-motivation often follows naturally.
Being part of a great program that offers more than just lessons also increases student motivation. Here at PCS, a practice app (Practice Space), recitals, performance parties, special events, and more are opportunities included with enrollment for all of our students.
#3 – A Perfect Teacher Match
Finding the right teacher can make all the difference. You definitely want to consider qualifications and experience, but you also want a good personality fit.
Look for someone you or your child clicks with – a teacher who inspires, understands your goals, and provides the right level of challenge. Make sure they are musically qualified and have passed a background check. A good teacher-student relationship can foster enthusiasm and a love for learning, setting the stage for success.
#4 – Time for Practice
Practicing regularly is crucial for progress. Without it, lessons can feel like a waste of time and money. But don’t worry – finding time to practice doesn’t have to be daunting. It’s all about planning and being creative with scheduling.
For example, squeezing in 10 minutes before breakfast and another 10 minutes before dinner adds up to 20 minutes a day, which is plenty for beginners and early-level students. Advancing students can increase the time to 15 – 20 minutes per practice session or even add a third short practice session after school or before bed.
#5 – Convenient Scheduling
Consistency is key in music lessons, so it’s important to find a lesson day and time that works well with your weekly schedule. This will help you avoid missing lessons and ensure you’re able to make progress and maintain your momentum.
At PCS, you can choose from either of our convenient studio locations on Pleasantburg Drive or Woodruff Road if you are looking for music lessons in Greenville. Lessons are offered during the day, after school, and in the evenings. Some Saturday lesson times are available as well.
#6 – Goals to Accomplish
Why do you want to learn music? Your “why” may be very different from someone else’s, and that’s okay. What’s important is to articulate your reason. Setting clear goals will give you more direction and purpose.
Maybe you want to play for fun or as a hobby. Perhaps you dream of joining a music ministry, entertaining friends, or expressing yourself creatively. Music can also be a powerful outlet for relieving stress or pursuing music professionally. Whatever your goals, share them with your teacher so they can help you achieve them.
Ready to Begin?
Now that you know what it takes to get started in music lessons, don’t wait. Whether you’re picking up an instrument for the first time, trying out a new hobby, or rediscovering a past passion, music lessons will enrich your life in countless ways – for now and long into the future as well.
